Supporting SEN students with AI powered English language assessments

Innovative AI Support for Students in Brazil

m2r Education was approached by Our Lady Mercy American School in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to explore how educational technology could enhance English language learning for students with specific educational needs, including learners on the autism spectrum.

AI Powered Digital Solutions

To meet the school’s goals, m2r Education recommended a pilot programme using AI-powered digital avatars. This platform allowed students to interact in a safe, controlled, and engaging environment. Each student received a personalised report highlighting both their current English language competency and level of engagement, enabling teachers to tailor support effectively.

Positive Impact on Students and Learning

The Head of School reported:

‘Our recent pilot using m2r’s AI supported avatar produced some of the most inspiring student engagement we’ve seen this year. Students interacted with the avatar with openness, confidence, and genuine enthusiasm, entering into natural conversations that quickly moved from simple answers to thoughtful reflections.
The impact was especially significant for students with special educational needs. Many who often find face-to-face interaction challenging were noticeably more relaxed. The avatar’s gentle pace, consistent tone, and non-judgmental approach created a safe space where they shared far more personal insights about their interests, feelings, and perspectives. This gave teachers a much deeper understanding of how they think and learn.
Perhaps most striking was the increased confidence students showed. Even typically quiet learners expressed their ideas clearly and honestly. Levels of communication we rarely see in traditional classroom settings. This openness not only enriched their learning but strengthened their sense of agency.
The pilot has reinforced the potential of well-designed AI tools to support student voice, particularly for those who benefit from alternative communication methods. The avatar helped students express themselves more fully while providing teachers with valuable insights for future support and planning.
